Books:

Once Upon a World: Rapunzel by Chloe Perkins and Illustrated by #OwnVoices Archana Sreenivasan
Lovabye Dragon by Barbara Joosse and illustrated by Randy Cecil
Maybe Mother Goose by Esme Raji Codell and illustrated by Elisa Chavarri
Inclusion:
The Once Upon a World series by Chloe Perkins takes familiar stories and moves them to unfamiliar locations. In this case Rapunzel is transported to India.
In Maybe Mother Goose the pages are filled with children from multiple cultures tripping their way through traditional nursery rhymes. We read one half last week and are reading the other half this week.
Flannel Game:
While elephants don’t show up in our version of Rapunzel, they do show up in many tales of India so we thought we’d use them as an element in this story time.

Elephant Rhymes
5 Elephants on a String
One purple elephant
Balancing step by step on a piece of string
She thought it was such a wonderful stunt
That she called for another elephant!
” ”
Five purple elephants
Balancing step by step on a piece of string
All of a sudden the string broke
And down came all the elephant folk!

Note: As you place the elephants on the felt board, carefully place them on the string. In the last verse tug the string quickly and all the elephants should fly up in the air.

Fairies Fly
(sung to the tune of “Frere Jacques”)
Fairies fly, fairies fly (undulate fingers as if they were the fairies, moving hands in the air)
All around, all around (move hands around in the air)
Fairies fly up high (Move hands up high)
Fairies fly down low (move hands low)
All around, all around (move hands around in the air)

Song:
(Sung to the tune of “If You’re Happy and you Know it”)
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my nose.
There’s a little elf he’s sitting on my nose.
He’s sitting on my nose, then off away he goes.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my nose.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my knee.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my knee.
He’s sitting on my knee, then quickly he will flee.
There’s a little elf sitting on my knee.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my head.
Thee’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my head.
He’s sitting on my head, then he goes to find a bed.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my head.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my feet.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my feet.
He’s sitting on my feet, then goes to find a seat.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my feet.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my hair.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my hair.
He’s sitting on my hair, but I don’t really care.
There’s a little elf, he’s sitting on my hair.
